Photos - Long Key Bridge to Key Largo

This photo album consists of various landmarks along the ECT Keys-Glades Connector from the south end of the Long Key Bridge, the second longest bridge in the Keys, to the north end of Key Largo, where the road splits and there are two alternatives to reach the mainland/ Because there is no blazing of this section of the trail, the images are intended to help you find your way.

Please Note: Because of the resolution of the photos, it can take a few minutes to load.

Long Key Bridge

These photos are of the south end of the Long Key Bridge. This is the second longest bridge in the Florida Keys. The Overseas Heritage Trail crosses using the old bridge on the oceanside. This old bridge is for unmotorized traffic only, and is primarily utilized by fishermen. Notice the posting regarding the use of tents and tarps on the bridge.

Layton Trail

On the bay side of the road, there is the hidden but quite wonderful Layton Trail. It is on the south side of the town of Layton and could easily be missed.

Anne's Beach

Named for Anne Eaton, this is a public beach and boardwalk. The monument is on the south end, the north end has public bathrooms and an outdoor shower, if you are interested in cooling off or rinsing off a layer of road dust.

Camping is not permitted here, unfortunately....

But enjoy the views notheless

And take advantage of the facilities

The 1935 Hurricane Memorial

In 1935, before storms were named, one of the most deadly hurricanes ever hit the Florida Keys. This is a memorial for the hundreds of lives lost.

Whale Harbor

On the south end of the Whale Harbor bridge is the Whale Harbor All You Can Eat (AYCE) Seafood Buffet. It is costly, but it is truly all you can eat and then some. This is about quality of the AYCE experience.

Founder's Park

A public park with public bathrooms, and it is located right next to the highway patrol.

Wild Bird Center

No ecotour experience is complete without a visit to the Wild Bird Center. This bird sanctuary tends injured birds and other animals with the goal of returning them to the wild. Some are injured to the point they can no longer function in the wild. The facility is nested among the mangroves on the bayside of the highway.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

John Pennekamp is one of the treasures of the Florida State Park System. Camping is avaialble, and if you are interested in some backcountry exploring along Card Sound Road, this is where you obtain your permits.
